Academy Award Predictions: Actress in a Leading Role

Unlike the men’s category, there has been a major shake up amongst the potential nominees for Actress in a Leading Role. With the fall festivals usually serving as a good indicator for the upcoming awards season, it would only be wise to focus on the buzz surrounding “Emma Stone” following the Golden Lion winning premiere of Poor Things at Venice. As well as heaping praise towards the film itself, many critics have lauded Stone’s performance as the best of her career, in a role that brings a surprising amount of heart and warmth for a Yorgos Lanthimos film.

The biggest new entry in my predictions is “Lily Gladstone” for Killers of the Flower Moon. The Native-American actress was a standout performer across the films that premiered at Cannes a few months ago and there was never any doubt that a possible Oscar nomination would be coming her way. However, most people, including myself, were under the assumption Gladstone would be placed in Supporting Actress, where she was deemed the early frontrunner. However, recently it has been stated that she will be campaigning in lead throughout Awards season, and if the the hype surrounding her performance is true, then she will no doubt be a serious contender for a Leading nomination.
