Tim Burton Movies Ranked

Having established himself in the early 90’s following the box office and critical successes of “Batman” (1989), “Edward Scissorhands” (1990) and “Batman Returns” (1992), Tim Burton became synonymous with darkly gothic fairy tales. His unique visual style and fascinatingly spooky world building saw Burton become a huge hit with audiences, garnering a cult like status within the industry.

To this day Burton continues to to stick close to his roots, however, the quality of his output has diminished over the years, with his latter projects failing to recapture the fantastical elements of his iconic earlier releases. Burton did find success however with his Netflix series “Wednesday”, with Jenna Ortega starring as the eponymous Addams Family teenager. Ortega has reunited with Burton for his latest project, the long-awaited sequel to his beloved cult classic dark comedy “Beetlejuice” (1988).

Having loved the original so much as a kid, I found “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” somewhat underwhelming despite recapturing the energy of its predecessor, and seeing the likes of Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara return. Regardless of my views, the film has become a box office smash for both Burton and Warner Bros. having grossed $110 million in its opening weekend in the U.S. alone, the second biggest opening of the 66-year-old director’s career.

To celebrate this landmark achievement for such a cinematic icon, I have listed my personal ranking of all 20 feature length movies directed by Burton to date. This excludes the likes of “The Nightmare Before Christmas”, which despite his heavy involvement, was not directed by Burton but by Henry Selick.

  1. One aspect of this list is how “uneven” his output is…he has a singular vision but that vision can certainly result in storytelling issues and characters a bit too far out of the norm….anyway great list!

  2. Casting Michael Keaton as Batman was genius, especially after his prior role in Mr. Mom. Batman was a real game changer for the whole comic book/superhero genre and they have Tim Burton to thank for its success

  3. This is an excellent list. I haven’t had the chance to see all of Tim Burton’s movies but I agree with your choices. However, I would probably place certain films high on the list. I have often loved his version of Batman and consider it to be one of the best comic book films ever made. It truly changed the comic book genre. I would place it in the top 5. Granted, I’ve not seen Big Fish which is a film that I’ll keep on my watchlist. Overall, though, a great list of films.

Here’s my thoughts on 1989’s “Batman”:

  4. Great list! The only movie I’d have ranked higher is Big Eyes. I loved that movie and, as a visual artist as well as a writer, I found it to be incredibly meaningful. Reading your list made me want to watch it again asap.
Having said all that, I believe it comes down to a matter of opinion and just because Big Eyes was extremely significant to me doesn’t mean it has to have the same significance to me.
It was wonderful looking through your list and seeing so many wonderful movies I’ve loved for years. Thank you for writing this.
