Lead Actor Predictions: September 2024

Despite my last Oscar predictions dating back to the start of summer, not a great deal has changed in the way of lead acting predictions. While some films have garnered more critical acclaim than others following their premieres at TIFF or Venice, the actor’s tied to these project have remained largely unaffected. “Joker: Folie a Deux” for example received underwhelming reviews but Joaquin Phoenix‘s central performance remains widely regarded, same goes for Sebastian Stan‘s turn as a younger Donald Trump despite “The Apprentice” having lukewarm reactions.

One of those to have boosted their chances following the fall festival season is Adrien Brody, for his central role in Brady Corbet‘s historical epic drama “The Brutalist”. Brody became, and still remains, the youngest ever recipient of the award in 2003 for his work in “The Pianist”, and will be hoping to join the elite club of two time winners of the Best Actor Oscar. Ralph Fiennes, who amazingly has yet to receive an Oscar in his illustrious career, has done himself no harm following his starring role in Edward Berger‘s Vatican thriller “Conclave”, with some critics believing it to be the best performance of Fiennes’ career.

Other notable performances still yet to be seen include Timothee Chalamet as Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown” and Paul Mescal in “Gladiator II”, the long awaited sequel to the 2000 epic that saw Russell Crowe win his first Academy Award.
