One of the easiest categories to predict in advance for the Academy Awards every year is that of Animated Feature. With so few heavy hitters when it comes to animation studios, it is relatively straight forward to hone in on what may be contending come Oscar night. This year is no different, which has been proven by the fact that my predictions have barely changed throughout the year, with the top six being the same for the past six months.
In terms of a winner, it appears to be a two horse race between Universal’s “The Wild Robot” and Disney Pixar’s “Inside Out 2”, the highest grossing animated film of all time. While I believe the former is the favourite at this stage, and would also be my own personal pick, the Academy may show their Disney bias once again. The next two in line are the international pick “Flow”, which may also appear as Latvia’s entry in International Feature, and Adam Elliot‘s critically acclaimed “Memoir of a Snail”.
The final slot will be likely to go to Aardman’s latest feature, “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl”, the follow up to the Oscar winning, first feature length outing for the iconic duo, which premiered on television on Christmas day here in the UK.
The only potential upset to this five comes from “Moana 2”, which has recieved mixed reviews from critics and audiences who have seen it as a downgrade from the first film. However, its impressive box office haul has only been topped by “Inside Out 2”, which may sway Academy voters in a bid to boost audience figures…but I doubt it.
