Technical Category Predictions: December 2024

This month’s Academy Award predictions are the fourth set I have done since March, having made my predictions every three months since the 2024 ceremony. However, this is the first time that I have predicted the below the line, technical categories. While they are often fairly straight forward compared to the above the line stuff, as you often know in advance which contenders will have the biggest productions and best visual effects etc, I have left it as late as possible with my predictions as I was not expecting too much to change throughout the year.

As far as those films that will likely dominate the techs this year, it is apparent that “Dune: Part Two”, “Wicked” and “Emilia Perez” will rack up a healthy number of nominations to accompany their above the line nominations. I am expecting the three tech giants to score 7, 5 and 5 nominations respectively below the line, closely followed by “The Brutalist” (4), “Conclave” (4) and “Gladiator II” (4).

The Denis Villeneuve sci-fi epic should be receiving one more nomination but has been egregiously disqualified in original score for repurposing existing music, a sentence not attributed to “Wicked” despite largely sampling music from a pre-existing stage play.
