Ahead of the 2025 EE BAFTA Film Awards, BAFTA have submitted their longlists for all categories, determining the final films in each categories to be submitted for nomination. The second round of voting opens on the 3rd January, with the final nominations announced on Wednesday 15th January.
While there are a couple films that have over performed here due to BAFTA repeating their historic British bias, most of the major contenders have continued to dominate the longlists, with “Emilia Perez” leading the way appearing on 15 of the lists. Just behind the musical crime-drama is Edward Berger’s Vatican thriller “Conclave” with 14. “The Brutalist” (11), “The Substance” (11), “Dune: Part Two” (10), “Wicked” (10) and “Anora” (9) continue their strong showings this award season, but the biggest surprise is Bob Dylan drama “A Complete Unknown” racking up an impressive haul of 11 longlists.
All of the eight mentioned take up the Best Film slots, alongside a couple surprises. Donald Trump biopic “The Apprentice” makes the Best Film longlist, having appeared on 5 longlists, and “Kneecap” rounds out the ten slots, having acquired an impressive 7 placements of its own.
It was a bad day at the office for a few films hoping to land an Oscar Best Picture nomination in two weeks, with “Sing Sing” (3), “A Real Pain” (2), “Challengers” (2) and “Nickel Boys” (1) all underperforming. While “Saturday Night” and “September 5” both failed to land a single longlist.
“Gladiator II” managed to rack up an impressive 9 selections, but its only meaningful above the line placement comes in the form of Denzel Washington in Supporting Actor.
