The nominations for the 83rd Golden Globe Awards have been announced this week, with Paul Thomas Anderson‘s epic “One Battle After Another” leading the way with 9 nominations, including a staggering 5 acting noms. It has proven to be a great nomination morning for international movies, with a record 5 out of 12 Best Film nominees not being in the English language, and 4 of these films being distributed by Neon. Joachim Trier‘s “Sentimental Value” leads the international contingent with 8 nominations.
There were solid showings for both “Sinners” and “Hamnet”, with 7 and 6 nominations respectively, but it was a disappointing day for “Wicked: For Good”, which despite racking up 5 nominations (one more than last year) it missed out on Motion Picture – Comedy/Musical, dampening its Oscar chances. Surprise nominations in that category include two Richard Linklater titles, “Nouvelle Vague” and “Blue Moon”
It was also a bad morning for “Avatar: Fire and Ash”, which only earned two nominations, and in weak categories: original song and cinematic achievement. Reviews are yet to be revealed for the third instalment in James Cameron’s sci-fi saga, but early word of mouth indicates it is the weakest of the three films to date and is looking likely to miss out on an Oscar Best Picture nomination.
The Golden Globe Awards will take place on Monday 12th January 01:00 GMT.
