Ahead of the 2026 EE BAFTA Film Awards, BAFTA have submitted their longlists for all categories, determining the final films in each categories to be submitted for nomination. The second round of voting opens on the 9th January, with the final nominations announced on Wednesday 27th January, surprisingly after the Academy Award nominations a week earlier.

There was very little surprise as to which films appeared on the most longlists, with “One Battle After Another” leading the away with a record breaking 16 mentions. This was closely followed by Shakespearean drama “Hamnet” and vampire thriller “Sinners” (14), “Marty Supreme” (13), and “Bugonia” and “Frankenstein” (12). The expected British bias saw films like “I Swear” and “The Ballad of Wallis Island” do well, both landing on the Best Film longlist. The 10 Best Film mentions are rounded off by “Sentimental Value” and most surprisingly, WWII courtroom drama “Nuremberg”, which has had no other award season recognition whatsoever.
With the exception of “Sentimental Value”, the International contingent massively underperformed on the longlists, which may be due to belated release dates here in the UK. Films like “Sirat”, “No Other Choice” and “The Secret Agent” are yet to be released in cinemas as we enter 2026, and Jafar Panahi’s “It Was Just an Accident”, which only received two nominations, was only released in select cinemas last month.
It was also bad day at the office for blockbusters “Wicked: For Good” and “Avatar: Fire and Ash”, which both underperformed when compared to their predecessors. Animated Film favourite “KPop Demon Hunters” was deemed ineligible due to its Netflix release, so its absence may allow “Zootropolis 2” or “Little Amelie” to gain some momentum and otentially surprise the record-smashing Sony animation. Other notable underperformers include “Wake Up Dead Man”, “Jay Kelly”, “The Smashing Machine” and “Rental Family”.
