As we approach Oscar nomination morning on 22nd January, the televised precursors continue and on Sunday night we had the 83rd Golden Globes serve as another indicator as to how those nominations may go. As predicted following its haul of nominations, the big winner on the night was Paul Thomas Anderson‘s “One Battle After Another”, having taken home four globes, including Motion Picture – Comedy/ Musical, and a slightly surprising Supporting Actress win for Teyana Taylor.
Anderson looks destined for his first Oscar win in a few months, having been nominated eleven times previously to no avail. Having taken the globes for Director and Original Screenplay on Sunday night, the acclaimed filmmaker will be looking to bag multiple Oscars on 15th March.
The other big winner at the Golden Globes was “Hamnet”, which beat out Ryan Coogler‘s heavily tipped “Sinners” to Motion Picture – Drama, as well as star Jessie Buckley being awarded Lead Actress in a drama. The semi-biographical Shakespearean drama has cemented itself in the top three contenders for Oscar gold alongside Coogler’s vampire horror and Anderson’s action-thriller, but the latter may take some beating. In a stacked International Film category, it was Brazil’s “The Secret Agent” that took the Golden Globe back to South America, with star Wagner Moura also winning for Best Actor in a Drama, repeating the success of compatriot Fernanda Torres last year for “I’m Still Here”.
The comedy/musical acting awards went to Rose Byrne and Timothee Chalamet, the latter looking likely to win his first Academy Award in a couple months, and the former looking to be the closest competition to Buckley in the female category.
