Awards Season is well and truly underway and the nominees for the 81st annual Golden Globe Awards are to be announced on Monday 11th December. The Golden Globes are one of the major precursors when determining which films will be big players at the upcoming Academy Awards. Other precursors to come in the next few months include: The BAFTA, SAG, Critic’s Choice, DGA and PGA awards.
The Golden Globes are ran by the Hollywood Foreign Press and they split the film categories into two: Drama and Musical/Comedy. Drama is typically seen as the most serious and competitive category, and usually has a stronger correlation with the Academy in terms of winners. This makes it far more competitive, usually leading to instances of category fraud, something that has repeated this year with Todd Haynes‘, May December, which has campaigned in Comedy/Musical, despite being a drama.
A major change from the HFPA this year is the increase from five to six nominees per category.
