Golden Globe Predictions 2024 – Supporting Actor

Awards Season is well and truly underway and the nominees for the 81st annual Golden Globe Awards are to be announced on Monday 11th December. The Golden Globes are one of the major precursors when determining which films will be big players at the upcoming Academy Awards. Other precursors to come in the next few months include: The BAFTA, SAG, Critic’s Choice, DGA and PGA awards.

Unlike the lead acting categories, supporting actor and actresses are placed in one category only, regardless of “genre”. This makes the supporting categories incredibly competitive but also gives a much clearer indication as to who may get nominated in a supporting role at the Academy Awards. Now with the increased number of nominees from five to six, we will hopefully see an increase in diversity amongst the acting categories. It is an incredibly competitive year this year and it pains me to know that the likelihood of John Magaro being nominated for “Past Lives” is very low, as it was one of my favourite performances of the year.

A major change from the HFPA this year is the increase from five to six nominees per category.

Below is my current and possibly final predictions for Golden Globe nominees in Supporting Actor:

  1. Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer)
  2. Ryan Gosling (Barbie)

  6. Dominic Sessa (The Holdovers)

Possible Contenders

  2. Willem Dafoe (Poor Things)
  3. Paul Mescal (All of Us Strangers)
