Awards Season is well and truly underway and the nominees for the 81st annual Golden Globe Awards are to be announced on Monday 11th December. The Golden Globes are one of the major precursors when determining which films will be big players at the upcoming Academy Awards. Other precursors to come in the next few months include: The BAFTA, SAG, Critic’s Choice, DGA and PGA awards.
Unlike the lead acting and best film categories, Directors are placed in one category only, regardless of “genre”. This makes the directing incredibly competitive but also gives a much clearer indication as to who may get nominated at the Academy Awards. Now with the increased number of nominees from five to six, we will hopefully see an increase in diversity amongst directors. Hopefully we can see two female nominees with Greta Gerwig, Celine Song and Justine Triet possible getting nominations for “Barbie”, “Past Lives” and “Anatomy of a Fall”, respectively. The absolute locks of the category include: Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese and Yorgos Lanthimos.
A major change from the HFPA this year is the increase from five to six nominees per category.
Below is my current and possibly final predictions for Golden Globe nominees in Director:
