Golden Globe Predictions 2024 – Screenplay

Awards Season is well and truly underway and the nominees for the 81st annual Golden Globe Awards are to be announced on Monday 11th December. The Golden Globes are one of the major precursors when determining which films will be big players at the upcoming Academy Awards. Other precursors to come in the next few months include: The BAFTA, SAG, Critic’s Choice, DGA and PGA awards.

Unlike most film award ceremonies, where Screenplay is split into Adapted and original, the Golden Globes have just the one Screenplay category. This makes the directing incredibly competitive and basically assures that those nominated will get into their respective screenplay categories come the Academy Award nominations. Due to the restricted amount of slots it is not the end of the world for those not nominated as there will be a further four nominees at the Academy Awards. There are five films that appear to be absolute locks for Screenplay: “Poor Things”, “Oppenheimer”, “Barbie”, “The Holdovers” and “Killers of the Flower Moon”. This means a bunch of films will be fighting out for the final slot.

A major change from the HFPA this year is the increase from five to six nominees per category.

Below is my current and possibly final predictions for Golden Globe nominees in Screenplay:

Predicted Six

  1. Poor Things (Tony McNamara)
  2. Oppenheimer (Christopher Nolan)
  3. Barbie (Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach)
  4. The Holdovers (David Hemingson)
  5. Killers of the Flower Moon (Martin Scorsese and Eric Roth)
  6. American Fiction (Cord Jefferson)

Possible Contenders

  1. Past Lives (Celine Song)
  2. Anatomy of a Fall (Justine Triet and Arthur Harari)
  3. Maestro (Bradley Cooper and Josh Singer)
  4. Air (Alex Convery)
  5. May December (Samy Burch)

Outsiders

  1. All of Us Strangers (Andrew Haigh)
  2. The Colour Purple (Marcus Gardley)
  3. Saltburn (Emerald Fennell)
  4. The Zone of Interest (Jonathan Glazer)
  5. Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret (Kelly Fremon Craig)

  1. This list reminds me that I MUST watch Maestro. I am a huge classical music and Leonard Bernstein fan and I loved the teaser. Bradley Cooper’s resemblance to Bernstein, including his voice, his incredible.
