Awards Season is well and truly underway and the nominees for the 81st annual Golden Globe Awards are to be announced on Monday 11th December. The Golden Globes are one of the major precursors when determining which films will be big players at the upcoming Academy Awards. Other precursors to come in the next few months include: The BAFTA, SAG, Critic’s Choice, DGA and PGA awards.
One of the toughest categories to predict by far is the International Feature category, or “Non English Language Film” as it is known at the Globes. Each awards body has its own rules for what films can be submitted making the awards race very inconsistent from start to finish. The clear frontrunner here will be Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” but the film was egregiously not submitted by France for the upcoming Academy Awards. This makes this category difficult to judge as a precursor as the Academy, and other awards bodies, tend to go against the grain and be a but left field with their nominations.
The Globes also have a tendency to nominate American productions as long as the majority of the dialogue is not in English. This has seen the likes of “The Farewell” nominated before, so I would not be surprised if “Past Lives” makes an appearance here
A major change from the HFPA this year is the increase from five to six nominees per category.
Below is my current and possibly final predictions for Golden Globe nominees in Non-English Language Film:
Predicted Six
- Anatomy of a Fall (France)
- The Zone of Interest (United Kingdom)
- The Taste of Things (France)
- Society of the Snow (Spain)
- The Teachers Lounge (Germany)
- Fallen Leaves (Finland)
Possible Contenders
- The Boy and the Heron (Japan)
- Past Lives (United States)
- Perfect Days (Japan)
- Four Daughters (Tunisia)
- 20 Days in Mariupol (Ukraine)
Outsiders
- Totem (Mexico)
- Monster (Japan)
- Io capitano (Italy)
- The Promised Land (Denmark)
- The Settlers (Chile)

The way I see it, “anatomy of a fall” is also a very likely winner.
