Golden Globe Predictions 2024 – Cinematic and Box Office Achievement

Awards Season is well and truly underway and the nominees for the 81st annual Golden Globe Awards are to be announced on Monday 11th December. The Golden Globes are one of the major precursors when determining which films will be big players at the upcoming Academy Awards. Other precursors to come in the next few months include: The BAFTA, SAG, Critic’s Choice, DGA and PGA awards.

A brand new award that has been brought in for the upcoming Golden Globes, in a desperate bid to increase viewing figures, is “Cinematic and Box Office Achievement”. It does not seem that long ago when the Academy were toying with the idea of a “Blockbuster” category to increase their own viewing figures, before the idea was ridiculed and eventually shelved. The HFPA, however, have stuck to their guns as they see the award as an opportunity to celebrate the biggest movies of the year and not necessarily the best. Turns out it is not the best year to bring the award in as the two biggest films of the year, “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” are likely to rack up a number of nominations anyway.

In order to qualify for the award, films have to meet a certain criteria: They must have have box office gross of $150 million, with at least $100 million coming from the US domestic box office.

There are a total of 8 nominees for the new category.
