81st Annual Golden Globe Award Winners

The first of the televised award shows kickstarted the 2024 award season last night with the 81st annual Golden Globes taking place. Going into the ceremony the spotlight was very much on “Barbie” on “Oppenheimer”, without doubt the two biggest films of the year, racking up nine and eight nominations respectively.

The big winner on the night, getting early momentum as we countdown the days to the Academy Awards in March, was “Oppenheimer” with five wins: Drama Film, Director, Actor Drama, Supporting Actor and Score. It was also a good night for “Poor Things” and “Anatomy of a Fall”, both of which unexpectedly snapped up awards ahead of “Barbie”, Comedy Film and Screenplay respectively. “Barbie” had a somewhat underwhelming night with only two wins in below the line categories, Original Song for “What Was I Made For” as well as picking up the inaugural Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award.

Along with “Anatomy of a Fall“‘s win in screenplay, the biggest surprise of the night was in Animated Feature, where Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron” beat “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” to the award.
