A24 Movies Ranked 60-51:

60. On the Rocks (2020)

Dir: Sofia Coppola

Cast: Bill Murray, Rashida Jones, Marlon Wayans

Synopsis: The story of a young mother who reconnects with her larger-than-life playboy father on an adventure through New York. In this comedy about aging, marriage, and the tenuous bond between parents and grown children, New York author and married mother-of-two Laura has become suspicious that her career-driven husband may be having an affair with a co-worker, a speculation encouraged by her caddish, bon vivant father.

59. Men (2022)

Dir: Alex Garland

Cast: Jesse Buckley, Rory Kinnear

Synopsis: Harper retreats to the countryside to be alone in the wake of a tragedy, but her unease at the town’s leering and uncannily similar men grows into a fully fledged nightmare as her arrival awakens something primal in the forest.

58. 20th Century Women (2016)

Cast: Annette Bening, Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig, Lucas Jade Zumann, Billy Crudup

Synopsis: In order to raise her adolescent son, Dorothea, a determined single mother, takes help from Abbie, a free-spirited punk artist, and Julie, her teenage neighbour.

57. Lean on Pete (2018)

Dir: Andrew Haigh

Cast: Charlie Plummer, Chloe Sevigny, Travis Fimmel, Steve Buscemi

Synopsis: Charley, a teenager, befriends Lean on Pete, an ageing racehorse, when he arrives in Portland. When Charley learns that the horse is bound for slaughter, he tries to save him.

56. Mississippi Grind (2015)

Synopsis: Gerry, a gambling addict, teams up with Curtis, a stranger whom he sees as a good-luck charm, and takes him on a road trip to win big money.

55. The Disaster Artist (2017)

Cast: James Franco, Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Alison Brie, Ari Graynor, Josh Hutcherson, Jacki Weaver

Synopsis: Tommy, an aspiring actor, faces many rejections and goes on to direct a movie titled ‘The Room’. However, the failed attempt at movie-making unexpectedly becomes a profitable cult film.

54. The Last Black Man in San Francisco (2019)

Cast: Jimmie Fails, Jonathan Majors, Tichina Arnold, Rob Morgan, Mike Epps, Finn Wittrock, Danny Glover

Synopsis: Jimmie Fails, a young man, dreams of being a permanent resident of San Francisco and seeks his friend Montgomery’s help to regain an ancient home built by his grandfather.

53. Spring Breakers (2012)

Dir: Harmony Korine

Synopsis: After stealing from diners, four college students head to Florida for their spring break. Soon, they are arrested only to be bailed out by a drug dealer who tries to convince them to join him.

52. Beau is Afraid (2023)

Dir: Ari Aster

Cast: Joaquin Phoenix, Nathan Lane, Amy Ryan, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Hayley Squires, Denis Menochet, Kylie Rogers, Parker Posey Patti LuPone

Synopsis: A reserved man who makes regular visits to a therapist to manage his anxiety finds himself challenged when he embarks on a tumultuous and emotional odyssey to get home to his mother.

51. Under the Silver Lake (2018)

Dir: David Robert Mitchell

Cast: Andrew Garfield, Riley Keough, Topher Grace

Synopsis: Sam, a lazy, jobless man who believes in conspiracy theories gets entangled in one himself when he decides to investigate his neighbour, Sarah’s, disappearance.

  1. Great posts as always. I definitely agree with all these films and their rankings. However, the one that stands out to me the most is “The Last Black Man in San Francisco”. I watched this film a few years ago but its message about gentrification really moved me. I remember being enthralled by gorgeous cinematography, excellent performances and sharp storytelling. It’s a shame the movie was largely overlooked and didn’t get any awards recognition. So, thanks for including it on this ranking of A24 movies.

  2. A24 has really mastered the “art” film: giving a wide range of Directors a chance to make a singular vision of a film – sometimes for better or worse, but NEVER the cookie cutter films released by most majors…great list!
