40. High Life (2018)

Synopsis: When a space mission goes wrong and the entire crew on the spaceship is wiped away, Monte must find ways to save his daughter and himself.

39. The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021)

Dir: Joel Coen

Cast: Denzel Washington, Frances McDormand, Bertie Carvel, Alex Hassell, Corey Hawkins, Harry Melling, Brendan Gleeson

Synopsis: A Scottish lord becomes convinced by a trio of witches that he will become the next King of Scotland. His ambitious wife will do anything to support him in his plans of seizing power.

38. American Honey (2016)

Synopsis: Star is a teenager who is burdened with the responsibilities of two children and an abusive father. However, her life changes when she runs away from home and joins a magazine-selling crew.

37. Priscilla (2023)

Synopsis: When teenage Priscilla Beaulieu meets Elvis Presley at a party, the man who is already a meteoric rock ‘n’ roll superstar becomes someone entirely unexpected in private moments: a thrilling crush, an ally in loneliness and a vulnerable best friend.

Synopsis: A cook and a Chinese immigrant secretly milk the cow of a wealthy Englishman and start baking and selling biscuits. Scared of stealing, they decide to bake one last batch but get in trouble.

35. The Spectacular Now (2013)

Cast: Miles Teller, Shailene Woodley, Brie Larson, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Bob Odenkirk, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Kyle Chandler

Synopsis: Sutter, a spoilt young man, and Aimee, a studious girl, develop a special bond and fall in love. However, they must overcome the challenges life throws their way, in order to stay together.

34. Climax (2018)

Synopsis: A group of French dancers gathers in an empty school to rehearse and party. However, their celebration soon turns into a nightmare when they realise that their drinks are spiked with LSD.

33. Enemy (2013)

Synopsis: Adam, a college professor, spots an actor in a movie who looks exactly like him. Adam tracks down his doppelganger and starts living his life secretly, which gives birth to a complex situation.

Synopsis: Jacob Yi moves to Arkansas with his wife and children to grow Korean produce and sell it to vendors. However, he faces several challenges in his quest which also threaten to destroy his family.

  1. Great list of A24 movies. I definitely agree with all of these choices with the exception of “Enemy” which I found overrated. However, the film on the list that resonated most with me was “The Spectacular Now”. I vividly remember seeing this film back in 2013. During this time, I was facing the trials and tribulations of high school. This film really moved me with its authentic depiction of high school. Despite receiving critical acclaim, it didn’t get any Oscar nominations. An intimate film with a small scope, it kind of flew under the radar getting lost in the big blockbusters released that year. So, thanks once again for including it on this list. Here’s why it holds a precious place in my heart:

This list continues to show just how much in command of the art-house, independent film genre A24 is – the margins are lower as are the budgets, and you don’t need a smash hit to keep you going, just a way to avoid a massive “miss”…bravo to them for financing the terrific Artists on display here…
