A24 Movies Ranked 30-21:

30. The Farewell (2019)

Dir: Lulu Wang

Cast: Awkwafina, Tzi Ma, Diana Lin, Zhou Shu-zhen

Synopsis: A Chinese family learns that their grandmother has less time to live so they organise a wedding before her death. However, Billi is unhappy with the family’s decision.

29. Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)

Dir: Halina Reijn

Cast: Amandla Stenberg, Maria Bakalova, Myha’la Herrold, Chase Sui Wonders, Rachel Sennott, Lee Pace, Pete Davidson

Synopsis: When a group of 20-somethings gets stuck at a remote mansion during a hurricane, a party game gone very, very wrong ends with a dead body on the ground and fake friends at every turn as they try to find the killer among them.

28. The Florida Project (2017)

Dir: Sean Baker

Cast: Willem Dafoe, Brooklynn Kimberley Prince, Bria Vinaite, Valeria Cotto, Christopher Rivera, Caleb Landry Jones

Synopsis: Moonee, a six-year-old girl, lives with her mother near Disneyland and spends the summer pranking and stealing from tourists while her mother struggles to make ends meet.

27. The Green Knight (2021)

Dir: David Lowery

Cast: Dev Patel, Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, Sarita Choudhury, Sean Harris, Ralph Ineson, Barry Keoghan

Synopsis: Sir Gawain, King Arthur’s young nephew, embarks on an adventurous journey and deals with ghosts, thieves and giants as he sets out to defeat Green Knight, a giant, after accepting his challenge.

26. Amy (2015)

Dir: Asif Kapadia

Synopsis: Filmmaker Asif Kapadia sheds light on the life, career and struggles of Amy Winehouse, a popular British singer-songwriter, through archived footage and testimonies from friends, family and peers.

25. Saint Maud (2019)

Dir: Rose Glass

Cast: Morfydd Clark, Jennifer Ehle, Lily Frazer, Lily Knight, Marcus Hutton, Turlough Convery, Rosie Samsom

Synopsis: Trouble ensues when a devout young nurse, Maud, who faced a tragic past gets obsessed with saving her dying patient’s soul.

24. The Lighthouse (2019)

Dir: Robert Eggers

Cast: Willem Dafoe, Robert Pattinson

Synopsis: On a remote island, Ephraim Winslow arrives as a lighthouse keeper and assists his elderly supervisor, Thomas Wake. As days pass, Winslow is haunted by strange and mysterious visions.

23. Civil War (2024)

Dir: Alex Garland

Cast: Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Nick Offerman

Synopsis: In a dystopian future America, a team of military-embedded journalists races against time to reach Washington, D.C., before rebel factions descend upon the White House.

Synopsis: A filmmaking crew and the cast make an adult movie at a reclusive place but elderly hosts find them and try to kill them.

21. First Reformed (2017)

Dir: Paul Schrader

Cast: Ethan Hawke, Amanda Seyfried, Cedric Kyles, Victoria Hill, Philip Ettinger

Synopsis: Ernst Toller is a Protestant minister who is dealing with the loss of his son and questions about faith that only get intensified when he meets Mary and Michael, a young couple who are facing issues.

  1. Great list once again of the best A24 movies. I agree with all of these films which are worth watching. However, I particularly loved “The Farewell”. Lulu Wang’s drama painted realistic portrait of Chinese immigrants. Even though I’m not Chinese, I related towards its strong message about immigration. I was upset by the fact that the film did not receive a single Oscar nomination. It kind of flew under the radar that year. So thanks for including it on your list.
