Despite the recent Cannes Film Festival, the acting categories remain fairly unpredictable with so many features and performances yet to be seen. The correlation between Cannes and the Academy regarding the acting categories is not as strong but if there were to be any crossover, then Jesse Plemons would be one to watch for his Best Actor award winning performance in “Kinds of Kindness”. My reservation however, being that Plemons portrays three separate categories in an anthology, which is hardly the Oscar’s cup of tea.
Colman Domingo remains the early frontrunner with his central performance in “Sing Sing” already been seen at TIFF in 2023, with the actor already being lauded with critical acclaim. Other potential candidates include Daniel Craig, looking for his first ever nomination, for Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming drama “Queer”, as well as Joaquin Phoenix who will be looking to repeat his 2020 Actor win as he reprises his role as Arthur Fleck in “Joker: Folie a Deux”.

Dan Loves Film 
Great predictions for lead actor. This category is a little harder for me to discuss because there doesn’t seem to be a clear frontrunner. All of these actors sound promising to me, but Jesse Plemons stands out the most. Plemons is a fantastic actor that has been giving strong supporting performances in several films. However, he has rarely been given the chance to showcase his talents in a lead role. In this regard, “Kinds of Kindness” seems to be a way to honor the actor. He definitely has built a strong record for giving scene-stealing turns in previous Oscar-nominated films. For instance, I loved his performance as a despicable FBI agent in “Killers of the Flower Moon”. So, I think Plemons has a fair shot of winning this.
