Lead Actress Predictions: September 2024

Now the fall award season has been and gone, more potential award worthy performances have been seen, however, it remains that Mikey Madison, for her universally praised performance in Sean Baker‘s “Anora”, remains top of my predictions, despite the film’s much earlier Cannes premiere in May. Also building off her Cannes performance is Karla Sofia Gascon, who took home Best Actress at the festival alongside her co-stars Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana. It is looking most likely that Gascon will be campaigned in lead with her co-stars settling for supporting, where they will look to break into a competitive race.

From the fall festival circuit, Angelina Jolie and Amy Adams both delivered critically acclaimed performances in “Maria” and “Nightbitch” respectively, despite the films themselves receiving middling reviews. Julianne Moore, Nicole Kidman and Marianne Jean-Baptiste also faired well on the festival circuit, with Kidman taking home the Venice Volpi Cup for Best Actress for her performance in “Babygirl”.

Lady Gaga’s much anticipated introduction into Todd Phillip‘s “Joker” franchise received a warm reception, despite reports of a surprisingly limited amount of screentime, which may see her campaigned in supporting. This may also be the case for Saoirse Ronan in Steve McQueen’s wartime drama “Blitz”, which premieres at LFF next month.
