Unlike the female categories, it is looking like there will be very little opportunity for category fraud in Supporting Actor. With most of the lead and supporting performances being far more distinct compared to the actress performances, the predictions are a bit more straight forward. However, Supporting Actor, which has produced some noteworthy winners over the years, has no real early frontrunner. Usually by this point in the year, one or two names are head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to the Oscar race, but that is not the case this year and will remain that way until we start seeing awards given out for supporting roles in the critics’ circles.
As a result Clarence Maclin remains in pole position for his breakout role in the inspirational true story “Sing Sing”, with his nearest competitor Samuel L. Jackson dropping off marginally following the premiere of “The Piano Lesson” earlier this month. Those who have joined the race following TIFF, Venice and Telluride include Stanley Tucci, Drew Starkey and Guy Pearce for their roles in “Conclave”, “Queer” and “The Brutalist” respectively.
Performances yet to be seen include: Edward Norton in James Mangold‘s Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown”; Denzel Washington in the long-awaited epic “Gladiator II”; and Harris Dickinson in Steve McQueen‘s wartime drama “Blitz”, which is premiering at LFF in October.
