Supporting Actress Predictions: September 2024

As mentioned in my Supporting Actor predictions, there may be a couple instances of category fraud amongst the female nominees at the upcoming Academy Awards. This has made it extremely difficult to place performances in either lead or supporting but I have tried to line up as best as I can with the Academy’s recent track record. Those who may, or may not be placed in supporting include Lady Gaga for “Joker: Folie a Deux”, as well as both Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore for their co-lead performances in “The Room Next Door”. There is also Saoirse Ronan, whose turn in Steve McQueen’s World War II drama “Blitz” is yet to be seen, with rumours speculating she will be more of a supporting motherly figure to the film’s central child protagonist.

Unlike most award seasons, there is no real frontrunner in most of the acting categories, which makes for an exciting race ahead. With no major awards handed out for supporting roles as of yet, we will not get a clearer indication as to who is the current favourite until the Critic’s Circles are well and truly under way. At this stage I have decided to keep Danielle Deadwyler and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor as the two to watch for their performances in “The Piano Lesson” and “Nickel Boys” respectively. Following closely behind, I have Felicity Jones and Isabella Rossellini, as well as “Emilia Perez” stars, Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez, both of whom shared the Cannes Best Actress prize with Karla Sofia Gascon in the summer.
