Cinematography: September 2024

One of my favourite categories of any Academy Award season is Cinematography. There is nothing more appealing to me than when AMPAS gets to highlight some of the best looking movies of the past year, and 2024 is looking incredibly strong. At this stage it is very difficult to look past Greg Fraser for his outstanding work on “Dune: Part Two”, with the cinematographer looking to repeat his success of winning the award for the first film three years ago. While I am yet to see many of the below due to belated UK release dates, based on strong word of mouth “The Brutalist” and “Conclave” also boats strong visuals and camera work.

Despite mixed reactions, “Joker: Folie a Deux” has recieved universal praise for how it looks, with many comparing it favourably to the previous film, which did secure a cinematography nomination in 2019. Best Picture contenders “Anora”, “Emilia Perez” and “Blitz” also will be looking at grabbing a spot in the five, with the latter premiering at LFF next week. Another film yet to be press screened is Robert Eggers’ remake of the classic German expressionist horror “Nosferatu”, with the filmmaker having previously seen his period horror drama “The Lighthouse” nominated.

Larger big-budget contenders hoping they are in for a shot include “Gladiator II” and “Furiosa”, both of which had their previous film nominated in this category in 2000 and 2015 respectively.
