Editing: September 2024

One of the most important categories when it comes to predicted potential Best Picture winners is Editing. In fact, since its inception in 1934, only 11 Best Picture winners have not received a nomination in the category, with only 2 of these being in the past 40 years, the seamless long take comedy drama “Birdman” (2014) and indie drama “CODA” (2021). If any of the potential frontrunners miss out on an editing nomination come announcement morning, they can start kissing their Best Picture chances goodbye based on AMPAS historical record dating back 90 years.

Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two” should have very little to worry about given the previous entry in the franchise won the award in 2021, at the expense of “CODA”, and is looking likely to repeat that feat here with Joe Walker looking for his second win in the category. Other strong Best Picture contenders looking increasingly likely to score an editing nomination include “The Brutalist”, “Anora”, “Blitz” and “Conclave”, with “Blitz” editor Peter Sciberras being the only previous nominee, also bested by Walker in 2021 having edited “The Power of the Dog”.

There could be arguments made for all fifteen films I have considered below, especially “Joker: Folie a Deux”, “Gladiator II” and “Furiosa”, given the previous entries in these franchises all scored Editing nominations in the past.
