My Top 10 Horror Movies

As Halloween is right around the corner, what better time to compile a list of my Top 10 Horror Movies of all time. This list explores a wide range of subgenres, eras and countries, all of which offering their own unique frights and in some instances gore. Let me know your favourite horror movie by leaving a like and a comment.

My Top 10 All Time Horror Movies:

10. Don’t look Now (1973)

Dir: Nicolas Roeg

Cast: Julie Christie, Donald Sutherland

Synopsis: After the death of their child, a couple moves to Venice, where the husband has an assignment of restoring a church. There, they meet a sister who claims their kid is trying to warn them of a danger.

9. REC (2007)

Dir: Paco Plaza, Jaume Balaguero

Cast: Manuela Velasco, Ferran Terraza, Jorge-Yamam Serrano, Pablo Rosso, David Vert, Vicente Gil, Martha Carbonell, Carlos Vicente

Synopsis: A television reporter and her cameraman record the horrifying outbreak of a disease that turns humans into vicious cannibals.

8. Suspiria (1977)

Dir: Dario Argento

Cast: Jessica Harper, Stefania Casini, Flavio Bucci, Miguel Bose, Barbara Magnolfi, Susanna Javicoli, Eva Axen, Alida Valli, Joan Bennett

Synopsis: When she arrives in Germany to attend a ballet school, Suzy realises that students are dying mysteriously. Soon, she discovers a terrifying secret about the academy.

7. The Exorcist (1973)

Synopsis: An actress notices dangerous changes in the behavior and physical make-up of her 12-year-old daughter. Meanwhile, a young priest begins to doubt his faith while dealing with his mother’s sickness.

6. Train to Busan (2016)

Synopsis: Seok-woo and his daughter are on a train to Busan on the latter’s birthday to see his wife. However, the journey turns into a nightmare when they are trapped amidst a zombie outbreak in South Korea.

5. Alien (1979)

Dir: Ridley Scott

Cast: Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm, Yaphet Kotto

Synopsis: The crew of a spacecraft, Nostromo, intercept a distress signal from a planet and set out to investigate it. However, to their horror, they are attacked by an alien which later invades their ship.

4. The Descent (2005)

Dir: Neil Marshall

Cast: Shauna Macdonald, Natalie Mendoza, Alex Reid, Saskia Mulder, Nora-Jane Noone, MyAnna Buring

Synopsis: A group of friends set out on an expedition to a cave. Their adventure turns into a nightmare when they get trapped inside the cave and are pursued by bloodthirsty predators.

3. Rosemary’s Baby (1968)

Dir: Roman Polanski

Cast: Mia Farrow, John Cassevetes, Ruth Gordon, Sidney Blackmer, Maurice Evans, Ralph Bellamy

Synopsis: On moving into an apartment with her husband Guy, Rosemary begins to experience creepy things happening to her. However, when she gets pregnant she realises that her fears are about to come true.

2. 28 Days Later (2002)

Synopsis: Twenty-eight days after the outbreak of a deadly virus in London, which infects everyone and turns them into braindead killers, the survivors try to cope with their losses and find sanctuary.

1. The Thing (1982)

Dir: John Carpenter

Synopsis: A research team finds an alien being that has fallen from the sky and is starting to hunt them down. Things take a sinister turn when they realise that the creature can take the shape of its victims.

  1. I have seven of these on my list! Whenever I tell people to check out “Train To Busan” they thank me after – what a movie! I put “Carrie” very high on my list but yours rocks…what a great time of year to celebrate horror!

  2. Some nice choices on here. I would definitely agree with Suspiria and 28 Days Later. Alien is also some heart-pounding stuff. But for me, I think the scariest horror film I’ve seen is the Wicker Man. The original obviously. Not the remake.

      2. Wish I listed a top 20 now but thinking off the top of my head films that may be in there. The Shining, The Babadook, Halloween, It Follows, Cabin in the Woods, Scream, Day of the Dead, The Wailing, The Wicker Man, Possession

  4. Excellent list. The title I would recommend on top is one of the most chilling horror movies I’ve ever seen, Japanese of course: “The Audition” (1999) by Takashi Miike. Watch it, you’ll never see the world with the same eyes afterwards.

  5. An excellent list of horror movies. I am honestly not a huge fan of the horror movie genre. However, there are films which I enjoy seeing in this genre. For instance, I have always been a huge fan of Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining”. It’s a timeless film that remains one of the best horror movies ever made. One of Jack Nicholson’s best movies. I bring it up because I noticed you didn’t include it in your list. Personally speaking, it’s my favourite horror film of all time.

    Here’s why I loved it:

  6. Great selection. Some wonderful choices. There isn’t one I disagree with but The Exorcist is definitely a favourite of mine so would stick it at the top ahead of The Thing, Rosemary’s Baby, and Alien. Good call on including The Descent – such a claustrophobic film that makes great use of its setting.
