While it may nit be the most telling precursor, the Gotham Awards often give a chance to those hoping for Oscar nominations to get a speech in early doors to kick start their campaign. While there isn’t the strongest of correlations between the Gothams and the Oscars, it cannot do harm in winning some industry awards at tgis early point in the season.
The biggest winners were “A Different Man”, “Sing Sing” and “The Nickel Boys”, with the former surprisingly winning Best Feature ahead of season favourite “Anora”, and the latter two winning in two categories. “Sing Sing” has fallen off recently on the campaign trail but wins here for Clarence Maclin and Colman Domingo, as well as planned re-release by A24, may see it sneak back into contention.
Like I said, very early days yet but with National Board of Review and AFI lists in the coming days, as well as Golden Globe nominations on Monday, there is plenty to keep a look out for.
