This busy week in the festival season continues, with AFI announcing their ten motion pictures of the year 2024. This follows a similar list compiled by the National Board of Review earlier this week, and is here just in time for the Golden Globe nominations on Monday.
Unlike the NBR, AFI’s line-up is relatively predictable, with all ten films listed being seen as the most likely titles to occupy the ten slots for Best Picture at the upcoming Academy Awards. The only films to appear at both NBR and AFI are “Anora”, “A Complete Unknown”, “Conclave”, “A Real Pain”, “Sing Sing” and “Wicked”, putting them in good stead at this early stage. Despite a NBR placement, it does not bode well however for the likes of “Juror #2”, “Queer”, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” or “Gladiator II”, with the AFI historically being more consistent with AMPAS voting tendencies.
AFI Top Ten Motion Pictures of the Year:
- “Anora” (Neon)
- “The Brutalist” (A24)
- “A Complete Unknown” (Searchlight)
- “Conclave” (Focus Features)
- “Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.)
- “Emilia Perez” (Netflix)
- “Nickel Boys” (Amazon MGM)
- “A Real Pain” (Searchlight)
- “Sing Sing” (A24)
- “Wicked” (Universal)

Great analysis…we watched “Sing Sing” the other night and it is terrific…a dark horse for a number of awards this year to be sure!

Great insight as always. The one “little film that could” has been “Sing Sing” so far, and it just may surprise come Oscar nomination time! By the way, a pretty strong year for film, huh?
