Supporting Actress Predictions: December 2024

Like supporting actor, supporting actress is very competitive this year. Barring the two frontrunners, Zoe Saldana and Ariana Grande, it is very difficult to call the final three nominees this year, with six actresses in contention, all of whom have shown up throughout the precursor nominations. Based on the strength of performances, coupled with the strength of their respective film, Felicity Jones and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor should make the cut, but you never can tell with AMPAS. Selena Gomez has polarised critics with her performance, but “Emilia Perez” could be the most nominated movie on the day, which could see her brought along as part of that package.

Danielle Deadwyler is excellent in “The Piano Lesson”, but she will most likely be the Netflix film’s only nomination, plus she was egregiously snubbed by the Academy two years ago despite giving the best performance of the year in “Till”. Isabella Rossellini has very little screentime in big awards player “Conclave” but is very memorable in the couple scenes she has, and Margaret Qualley is being swept up in the surprising award season push for “The Substance”, having earned nominations at the Globes and Critics’ Choice, but will the film be to the Oscar voters’ taste.

It is hard to call this year, but cannot see anything other than a Saldana win in all honesty.
