31st Annual SAG Awards Nominations

“Wicked” leads with five nominations

Now that the Golden Globe Awards have taken place and both BAFTA and AMPAS have released their longlists and shortlists respectively, award season is starting to gain traction. One of the largest voting bodies of the Academy Awards is the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), which comprises of over 160,000 actors, presenters and journalists across the industry.

The nominations were not televised this year due to the devastating wildfires in California, instead they were announced via press release at 15:30 GMT.

It was a huge showing for “Wicked” at this year’s nominations, with the fantasy musical racking up an impressive five nominations, with Jonathan Bailey entering the Supporting Actor race with his first major nomination of the season here. Other strong performers included “A Complete Unknown” (4 nominations), “Anora” and “Emilia Perez” (3 nominations each). The final Ensemble nomination, the SAG equivalent to Best Film, went to “Conclave”, which earned one other nomination for Ralph Fiennes.

Several of the acting categories have been blown wide open here, with only Lead Actor looking to be a pretty safe five for the Academy Award nominations. There were slightly surprising nominations for both Pamela Anderson and Jamie Lee Curtis for “The Last Showgirl”. Having been on nobody’s radar, Curtis is now has a BAFTA longlist and a SAG nomination to put her in the mix of an already stacked supporting actress race. The only supporting actresses to repeat their Globe nominations are Zoe Saldana and Ariana Grande, the two clear frontrunners in the category. Monica Barbaro joins co-stars Timothee Chalamet and Edward Norton as a SAG nominee for her performance in the Bob Dylan biopic. The fifth supporting actress slot went to Danielle Deadwyler, who so far has been shut out everywhere else, kickstarting her award season campaign.

Both Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman miss out on a Lead Actress nomination as a result of Anderson’s inclusion, with the other four nominees: Cynthia Erivo, Demi Moore, Mike Madison and Karla Sofia Gascon all but cementing an Oscar nomination in two weeks.
