Ever since both the PGA and the Academy Awards have increased their nomination slots to 10, there has been a strong correlation between the two. The PGA nomination usually go at least 8/10 with the eventual Best Picture nominations at the Academy Awards, last year they remarkably matched the Oscars 10/10 when it came to nominees, with both bodies also selecting “Oppenheimer” as film of the year.
It therefore does not bode well for those who have missed out on the ten slots here, particularly those that have also underperformed at BAFTA or other guilds. Two contenders that have missed out on a PGA nomination are “Sing Sing” and “Nickel Boys”, with “A Real Pain” and “September 5” taking the all decisive final two slots. With the remaining eight nominees here being pretty much locked for a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards, the final two slots will be taken up by two of these four films. I now expect “A Real Pain” to get in as it has a nicer package of a guaranteed screenplay nomination, as well as a likely win in Supporting Actor to boost its chances. “Sing Sing” will likely get Lead Actor and Adapted Screenplay, as well as having a chance in Supporting Actor also. “Nickel Boys” on its very best day could rack up the most nominations, with potential in Directing, Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay and Cinematography, but has been overlooked massively so far this award season outside of Screenplay. Meanwhile “September 5” could also make Screenplay, as well as Editing, but it was completely shut out on the BAFTA longlists.
As for the PGA animation category, there were no real surprises with “Moana 2” coming in for “Memoir of a Snail” in the only real change to the usual season line-up.

Terrific insight as always. It’s a case of too many strong films, lack of publicity and promotion for a few of them, and the good old “M” word: MOMENTUM.
