The 97th Academy Awards will be taking place this coming Sunday, and as per usual there are several nominations that movie fans have expressed their disapproval of. The Academy have a history of nominating, and awarding, films that are surging at that particular moment, only for that movie’s legacy to dwindle years later. This has movie lovers question previous winners, especially in Best Picture, where we see lesser known, or less popular movie beat generational classics to the Oscar.
Here at DanLovesFilm I try to right the wrongs of AMPAS by announcing nominees at my own award show, the DanLovesFilm Awards, which is now in its 2nd year. Last year I awarded Best Film to Celine Song‘s “Past Lives”, a film that recieved no Oscar wins at the 96th Academy Awards, but overall I shared the love amongst a number of films with no film receiving more than 4 awards, which was “Poor Things”.
Last years DanLovesFilm award winners can be seen here:
As mentioned in last years post, there are some absent categories and some new ones I have introduced. Those absent include the short films, documentary and original song. I never manage to find myself in a position to accurately pick short films or documentaries as I only watch 1 or 2 a year, so decided to scrap it. As for song, this is a famously weak category, further highlighted this year with two Oscar nominations for “Emilia Perez”, so I also will not be awarded any songs.
New categories I include are ones I believe the Academy should introduce as part of their voting program, these include Ensemble, which is present at SAG, Voice Performance, and Stunts, another category awarded at SAG and one their has been strongly suggested to the Academy in recent years.
I also should reiterate that I have seen a great number in films in 2024, but not everything. Notable films I have yet to see are “Memoir of a Snail”, “The Last Showgirl”, plus a number of the International films, but I have seen all of the Oscar Best Picture line-up, with me only matching four of the ten nominated.
