Having recently posted my review of Disney’s latest live-action remake of one of their animated classics, “Snow White”, and with another one coming to the big screen next month with the release of “Lilo & Stitch”, I thoight I’d take the time to rank all 23 live-action remakes Disney have produced so far, dating back to the very first one in 1994, “Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book”.
Generally, I am not a huge fan of these Disney live-action remakes, as I feel that very few of them manage to even get close to recapturing the magic that made their animated counterparts so iconic decades prior, however there are a handful of exceptions where I believe Disney, and the modern day filmmakers involved, have at least tried to bring something new to the table, whether it be thematically or artistically.

Let me know which Disney live-action remake is your favourite in the comments.

As I read your list, I got very sad: why did they have to do this to any of them? Animated classics turned into CGI-driven tales that take away the magic! Losing $200+million on Snow White has put the brakes on these efforts and glad to hear it.

I agree with you. Cruella was really good in my opinion, and beauty and the beast was pretty much the closest to the animation compared to the others

There’s a few I like, but I’m with John. Why did Disney do this. Oh wait, I know the answer to this: money, money, money. Thanks for the review.

I’ve only seen 8 on this list, and Cruella is at the very top. I’ve enjoyed Maleficent, 101 Dalmatians, and Alice in Wonderland. For me, it works when it’s a live-action reboot or interpretation of the source material, but when it falls apart, it’s mostly CGI remakes of the animated version. So far, I’ve watched only Beauty and the Beast, and it did not work for me. Well made from a technical perspective, and the acting was fine, but overall, unnecessary.
Let’s be honest, this is not a new trend. I’m turning 50 this year, and I remember watching old movies that were made even before my parents were born. How many times has Robin Hood been remade? How many versions of Biblical stories have we seen in the last 100 years? The industry has been running out of fresh ideas, and at the same time, the evergreen classic stories can only appeal to the younger generations if they are made with modern film techniques and portrayed by contemporary actors.
We’ll always have the animated classics.
