Similarly to the other categories, it remains incredibly early to predict who will be the big acting contenders this coming award season, with only the likes of Michael B. Jordan (“Sinners”), Matthew McConaughey (“The Rivals of Amziah King”) and Tom Hiddleston (“The Life of Chuck”) having had their performances seen in the US.
The first o two potential nominees who recieved praise at Cannes is Academy favourite Denzel Washington, for his performance in the latest Spike Lee joint, “Highest 2 Lowest”. Washington was awarded an honorary award at the festival following the premiere of his performance, but his thunder was undoubtedly stolen by the festival’s Best Actor winner, Wagner Moura, for his leading role in Brazilian political thriller “The Secret Agent”.

There is a plethora of actors who have done the rounds during previous award seasons multiple times yet to have their movie premiere in 2025, these include; Timothee Chalamet (“Marty Supreme”), Leonard DiCaprio (“One Battle After Another”), Colin Farrell (“The Ballad of a Small Player”), Matthew McConaughey (“The Rivals of Amziah King”), George Clooney (“Jay Kelly”) and Jesse Plemons (“Bugonia”). Another notable inclusion in this year’s acting roster is Daniel Day-Lewis, who has come out of retirement to star in his son’s film “Anemone”, so it would be foolish to ignore the 3-time Lead Actor winner.
Established actors looking to land their first Oscar nomination include Jeremy Allen White (“Deliver Me from Nowhere”), and Dwayne Johnson (“The Smashing Machine”).
