Lead Actress Predictions: June 2025

Unlike the lead actor category, several of the potential female Oscar contenders have had their performances seen already in 2025, a number of which have earned rave reviews at Cannes or one of the indie movie circuits. Actresses who have come out of last month’s Cannes Film Festival having recieved critical acclaim, thus establishing themselves as potential award players include; Renate Reinsve (“Sentimental Value”), Jennifer Lawrence (“Die, My Love”), June Squibb (“Eleanor the Great”), and Eva Victor (“Sorry, Baby”).

Outside of Cannes, Rose Byrne and two-time Oscar winner Jessica Lange have also recieved stellar reviews for their performances in “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You” and “Long Day’s Journey into Night” respectively. An obvious choice to have in the five slots so early in the year is Cynthia Erivo, who will be reprising her role as Elphaba in “Wicked: For Good” later in the year, a role that earnt her a nomination at the 97th Academy Awards.

Other past winners and nominees that are appearing in prestige titles between now and the end of the year include; Julia Roberts, Amanda Seyfried, Jessie Buckley, Emma Stone, Anne Hathaway, Olivia Colman, Amy Adams and Margot Robbie, so it is still all to play for at this incredibly early stage in award season, with me only being relatively confident in Erivo and Reinsve making the cut at this moment in time.
