Now that the Golden Globe Awards have taken place and both BAFTA and AMPAS have released their longlists and shortlists respectively, award season is starting to gain traction. One of the largest voting bodies of the Academy Awards is the Actor Awards (previously known as SAG), which comprises of over 160,000 actors, presenters and journalists across the industry.
Like at the other award bodies so far this season, “One Battle After Another” leads the way with an unprecedented seven nominations, having been nominated in all categories, only the second film in the guild’s history to accomplish this. Vampire horror “Sinners” also performed well as expected with five nominations, including a surprise Supporting Actor nomination for newcomer Miles Caton. His presence is at the expense of the Golden Globe winner in this category, Stellan Skarsgard, who misses out alongside his “Sentimental Value” co-stars, most likely due to the guild’s oversight into the International films this year. None of the the foreign language contingent made the nominees this year, with Wagner Moura, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Renate Reinsve and Elle Fanning also missing out, despite being nominated elsewhere this season.
Jesse Plemons and Emma Stone secured nominations for “Bugonia” which has been an ever present all award season which bodes well for its Oscar chances, and Odessa A’zion and Wunmi Mosaku appear to be possible replacements for the “Sentimental Value” supporting actresses if they were to miss out on Oscar nominations.
The ensemble nominees match the five films listed at the Director’s Guild last week, essentially establishing them as the top five films in the Oscar race, with “Hamnet”, “Frankenstein” and “Marty Supreme” joining “Sinners” and “One Battle After Another”.
