Ever since both the PGA and the Academy Awards have increased their nomination slots to 10, there has been a strong correlation between the two. The PGA nomination usually go at least 8/10 with the eventual Best Picture nominations at the Academy Awards, which exactly how they matched last year, having remarkably matched the Oscars 10/10 when it came to nominees the year prior.
It therefore does not bode well for those who have missed out on the ten slots here, particularly those that have also underperformed at BAFTA or other guilds. It is worth noting that International films tend to be largely ignored by the American guilds, so it is no surprise that the likes of “It Was Just an Accident”, “No Other Choice” and “The Secret Agent” are absent here, despite potentially securing Best Picture nominations at the upcoming Academy Awards. There was enough room however to see Joachim Trier‘s “Sentimental Value” amongst the nominees, cementing it as the strongest International player at this moment in time.
Other than the foreign language omissions, nine of the ten nominees are expected, with the crucial tenth slot going to smash hot horror “Weapons”, an incredibly pick that has beaten the likes of “Wicked: For Good”, “Avatar: Fire and Ash”, “Rental Family”, and “Wake Up Dead Man” to be in the list of 10.
As for the PGA animation category, very little seems to be challenging “KPop Demon Hunters” at the moment, and that appears once again here alongside seasonal mainstays “Elio” and “Zootropolis 2”. Surprise exclusions here are “Arco” and “Little Amelie or the Character of Rain”, which miss out to “The Bad Guys 2”, and anime sensation “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no yaiba Infinity Castle”.
