98th Academy Awards Nominations Announced

Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” becomes the most nominated film in Oscars history with 16 nominations, toppling the previous record held by “All About Eve”, “Titanic”, and “La La Land”

Despite coming out way back in April, the vampire horror has reached an unprecedented tally today, with Delroy Lindo’s slightly surprising nomination in Supporting Actor securing the record number. Paul Thomas Anderson‘s “One Battle After Another” also had an impressive haul with 13 nominations, although breakout star Chase Infiniti missed out.

The final best picture slot ultimately went to racing film “F1” which had 4 nominations, with “Weapons” (1), “It Was Just an Accident” (2), and “Blue Moon” (2) all narrowly missing out on the line-up. The biggest omissions though came from hit musical sequel “Wicked: For Good”, which was staggeringly shut out all together, not even securing a single nomination, a stark contrast to the ten nominations the first film got last year. Fellow blockbuster juggernaut “Avatar: Fire and Ash” got two nominations in Costume Design and Visual Effects, and hit Netflix animation “KPop Demon Hunters” also got two nominations.

The real surprises were in the short and documentary categories though which are proving to be more unpredictable by the year, plus some nice solitary inclusions in the technical categories including “Kokuho” and “The Ugly Stepsister” for Makeup and Hairstyling also kept things exciting.

The 98th Academy Awards takes place Sunday 15th March:

  1. Great posts as always. It’s always interesting to discuss the Oscar nominations. For the most part, I’m pretty happy with this year’s crop of nominees. I do love Sinners but feel that its 16 nominations is a little over-the-top. I felt there were other incredible films this year like “Sorry, Baby” which deserved more recognition than they got. I am happy for Hamnet being rewarded eight nominations which is my favourite film of the year. Overall, it’s a solid list of nominees and I am definitely excited to see which movies will take home the big prize.

Here’s my personal thoughts on “Sinners”:
