Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” take home the top prize at the 98th Academy Awards, picking up six awards in total, beating out competition from “Sinners”

Despite an extra long award season last year shifting momentum back towards “Sinners” in recent weeks, Paul Thomas Anderson and “One Battle After Another” still came out on top at this year’s Academy Awards on Sunday night. The political thriller took home six awards, including Best Picture, Director, Casting, Editing, Adapted Screenplay, and Supporting Actor for an absent Sean Penn.
It was a ceremony with very few surprises, with the first major one of the night coming in live-action short of all categories where there was a tie. You could see the initial panic on Kumail Nanjiani‘s face as he opened the envelope, before composing himself and announcing “The Singers” and “Two People Exchanging Saliva” as the two winning shorts. Other minor shocks came in Cinematography and the inaugural casting category, which effectively swapped between the expected wins for “One Battle After Another” and “Sinners” respectively. This did give us one of the more memorable and historic moments of the night as Autumn Durald Arkapaw became the first woman to win an Oscar for cinematography in the Academy’s 98-year history.
Most other awards went as expected, with Michael B. Jordan snapping up Best Actor following his late surge in the season to pip Timothee Chalamet to the award. This meant “Marty Supreme” left the festivities empty handed, as well as fellow Best Picture nominees; “Bugonia”, “The Secret Agent”, and “Train Dreams”. There were lone wins for “Hamnet”, “F1”, “Sentimental Value”, “Avatar: Fire and Ash”, and “Weapons” with Amy Madigan securing her first ever Oscar at 75-years of age.
“KPop Demon Hunters” won two awards including Animated Feature and song for “Golden”, “Frankenstein” took home three awards for Production, Makeup and Costume Design, and “Sinners” finished the night with four wins.

I guess I actually wanted Sinners to win Best Picture, because I felt kind of disappointed when One Battle won it. So many layers to Sinners…
Was very happy for Michael B Jordan. I thought his acceptance speech was exceptionally self-aware and gracious.

Also, that was funny when Kumail Nanjiani said “don’t panic, we will get through this!” over the tie 🤣
Do you think they prepped him for that? Or was it a total surprise to him? If so, he handled it well!

I presume the get told what to do in the event of a tie but they never expect it to actually happen haha

Kumail had a night for the ages! I shared my 9 top predictions on Sunday morning and all of them came through…some people expected a “Sinners” sweep but there were signs that it would share the night with “One Battle” and it did. So many others were left behind however.
