While there are flaws from a filmmaking perspective, ‘Sound of Freedom’ succeeds in raising awareness of its sensitive subject matter
When it comes to writing reviews on this blog, there are several things I take into account. These can range from the pure craft of the film itself, to its cultural impact and emotional impact on me personally. ‘Sound of Freedom’ makes it very difficult for me to stick to my usual conventions of reviewing a film, as it is not just a form of entertainment media, but also a campaign to raise awareness about a shockingly real world issue. As a result I have removed a star rating from this review, as it does not seem justified to give a mark out of five to a film which is not trying to be the best film it can be, but simply to bring attention to the horror that is child sex slavery, and the sheer scale of its presence throughout society.
The film is a semi-autobiographical account of Tim Ballard, an American anti-human trafficking activist. In 2013, Ballard founded Operation Underground Railroad, a non-profit anti-sex trafficking organisation. Ballard personally cast Jim Caviezel to play him in the movie after seeing his work in 2002’s The Count of Monte Cristo.
The film follows Ballard as he tries to rescue a Honduran brother and sister who have been kidnapped and sold into child sex slavery in South America. Without jurisdiction in Colombia, Ballard is forced to resign from Homeland Security to fulfil his mission in saving these children from such horrific crimes against humanity. There are some artistic liberties taken, but the central theme of slavery and human-trafficking is very much real, which can make ‘Sound of Freedom’ very difficult to watch at times. There is one harrowing sequence in particular, where real life footage shows several young children grabbed on the street and thrown into the back of unmarked white vans to be sold into slavery. This sets the tone for the film very early on as it is not afraid to show the true extent of these crimes, something that bigger Hollywood movies tend to shy away from.
As a small independent movie, ‘Sound of Freedom’ has faced several road blocks on its way to being released. As well as the Covid-19 pandemic which affected the movie industry as a whole, it also faced issues getting distribution due to its content. Whilst there is nothing overly graphic shown on screen, it is heavily implied, something which American production companies and distributors were unwilling to market. As a result the film has taken five years to hit the big screens, with the help of small Christian based movie production company Angel Studios. Without the money available to them to market the film in the traditional sense, Angel Studios started a pay-it-forward campaign. A message at the end of the film by Caviezel, urges viewers to buy an extra ticket “for someone who would not otherwise be able to see the film”, in attempt to raise awareness of child sex-slavery. This marketing approach has been a resounding success, and has seen ‘Sound of Freedom’ become one of the most successful independent films in history, grossing $184million against a modest budget of $14million.
While the film itself is flawed, with bizarre tonal shifts and underwhelmingly slow pacing, it manages to achieve what it has set out to do – raise awareness. Despite its issues as a film, there is no doubt that the film is a success when it comes to its marketing and just for that alone and the message it is trying to spread across the world, it is worth checking out.

I think the mixed reviews this film has gotten are more politically motivated than they are actual reviews. That in itself is shameful.

Definitely unfair controversy surrounding it. I do feel there are some issues though

I did a bit of googling after watching this movie myself because of the strange things that my cousins were talking about afterwards. Things such as unfounded conspiracy theories unrelated to the movie theme. They are prone to believe, religiously, all things conspiracy theory. It made me worry about the flare up of QAnon sentiment this would result in. The film itself was an eye opener but I think in a whole the personal beliefs of the people involved with it will have a dangerous effect on people who tend to believe there’s a conspiracy in everything.

There is more truth to “conspiracy” than you can even imagine. All the lies we were told by the CDC and our gov leaders and the inflation of covid numbers, disgusting. NY Times said 33 percent over inflated numbers, which means prob 50 percent over inflated. And people followed every stupid rule the gov put out and though people did lose their lives, it was half the amt we were told or less. And made politicians rich off of pharma stocks. So, you may want to investigate more. Maybe your family’s theories truly are crazy, but maybe they are not. I would trust them more than the media or politicians if I were you.

We can choose to believe what we want but as much as I respect my family they don’t have any scientific or real skills in objectivity. Being a scientist myself, I feel more inclined to trust my own deductions based on evidence from various reputable sources. There may be some fails, some wins, some losses, and even corruption, but I do believe that avid conspiracy theorists will use a specific incident to justify beliefs in a million other conspiracies which is a juvenile way of viewing the world.

Stay with your eyes open bc the govts worldwide are in on all of this stuff to depopulate. Margaret Sanger, Gates, Schwab- all advocates for reducing the population. These are facts not fiction. Gates gives funding to lab where corona came from. He also owns more than a third of our farmland. He also has stocks/interests in big pharma. He is no scientist, yet he is in control in large, of big pharma poison and affiliated with everything to do with the minimalizing of the human race. So trust yourself all you want, but the one world crap is real. Go to W E F site. They are telling you what they plan to do. I have 4 degrees and do not need them to do that much research. A 3rd grader can find that out.

I have not watched it yet but will look it up. But from what you’ve written here, I get the picture and looks like that of a movie with a similar theme called “Priceless” which I watched with my kids a few years ago. And led us to discuss the issues related to child and human trafficking as a whole. Thanks for sharing.

Omg! I am.so bummed I didnt get to see this! Everyone said it was so awesome but so heart breaking. Those who hate on it is bc they don’t want the pedos in Hollywood and our gov to be exposed in any way. And a movie like that is one step closer to showing who they really are.

I think most of the hate is politically charged particularly against Jim Caviezel

I could not bear to watch it. It’s a terrible curse on humanity and that there is a demand for such a thing is abhorrent. But I am glad the film made it for those with stronger stomachs than mine.
