BAFTA Nominations Announced

With only a matter of days before the Academy Awards announce their nominations for the upcoming 96th Oscars, the final televised precursor, BAFTA have announced theirs.

Following these final lists of nominees, on top of the recently announced winners at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice, we can now start to see who is likely to emerge as contenders at the all important Academy Awards.

Going into the nominations the top early contenders were of course “Barbie”, “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Oppenheimer”, all three of which managed to rack up a joint record 15 longlist mentions each, equalling last years record set by “All Quiet on the Western Front”. However, it was Oppenheimer that came out on top this afternoon with a total of 13 nominations, followed by “Poor Things” with 11 and Killers of the Flower Moon and “The Zone of Interest” both with 9.

It was also a good day for fellow Best Picture nominees “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Holdovers”, with 7 nominations each. It was a bad day at the office for serious award season contender Barbie however, missing out on Best Film and Directing nominations, and only receiving 5 nominations from its 15 longlists.

The BAFTA ceremony hosted by David Tennant is taking place Sunday 18th February.
