Academy Award Nominations

Here we are, after months of speculation and campaigning, AMPAS have announced the nominees for the upcoming 96th Annual Academy Awards and it is no surprise that the film with the most nominations is “Oppenheimer” with 13. It is closely followed by “Poor Things” with 11 and “Killers of the Flower Moon” with 10.

Despite getting 8 nominations it was not the best day for big contender “Barbie”, missing out in pivotal categories: Editing, Director and Lead Actress. It is usually a precedent that if a film is to have any chance of winning Best Picture it needs an editing and/or a directing nomination, and with Greta Gerwig‘s film missing both, it does not bode well for Barbie in Picture. The only three films to get editing, screenplay and director are the seriously strong Oppenheimer and Poor Things, as well as “Anatomy of a Fall” which racked up an impressive 5 nominations, despite not being submitted for International Film.

The hardest category to predict as usual with the Academy Awards was Documentary Feature, with “American Symphony” missing out. There was no real surprises outside of Annette Bening sneaking into Actress at the expense of Margot Robbie and “The Zone of Interest” earning an Adapted Screenplay nomination ahead of Killers of the Flower Moon.

Finally, with 2 nominations in Visual Effects and Sound, “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” becomes the first film in the franchise to receive a nomination at the Academy Awards.

  1. Wow! I can’t believe Poor Things got more nominations than Barbie. It’s a weird niche art film. And I really didn’t like Oppenheimer as a feature. It should’ve been a limited series. Barbie affected millions of women. I’m outraged that Greta Gerwig did not get nominated for Best Director. Boycotting.

    1. I am not surprised by the academy in the slightest that Greta did not get in, but I think to not nominate Margot as Barbie is outrageous as she owns the film, especially if America Ferrera gets a nomination

      1. Totally agree about Bening. I liked Nyad, but her acting was obvious throughout. Did not see Flower Moon yet and have no idea what Celine Song put out, but how do you NOT nominate the director of a true cultural phenomenon?? Did they even go to an American theater this summer and see all the people dressed in pink??? Greta should’ve been nominated ahead of all of them. Barbie was brilliant AND accessible.

      2. Celine Song directed Past Lives. As much as I liked Barbie I would put the phenomenon and the message it gets across more down the the producing and screenplay, which Greta is nominated for. They can still award her in screenplay and I think they will

  2. The worst Oscar nominations in years. The amount of snubs here are shocking to say the least. Past Lives stands out the most to me. 2 nominations is such a let down. Greta Lee should have been nominated and so did Celine Song. Is the Academy resorting back to racism after EEAAO’s win last year? I dunno but I’m never going to forgive them for this.
