Every year when award season comes round there is always public out cry when a number of highly regarded films and performances are overlooked by the major award bodies. Prime examples including Toni Collette and Amy Adams missing out on Oscar nominations for career best performances in “Hereditary” and “Arrival” respectively.
With the 96th Academy Awards on the horizon, I have decided to make good all the wrongs committed by AMPAS when it comes to their Academy Award nominations, by announcing the nominees for the 1st Annual DanLovesFilm Movie Awards.
This being my first award season since I have began my movie reviews and blogs, I will be celebrating what I consider to be the strongest achievement in filmmaking of 2023. For a film to be eligible they must have had a US release date in the year 2023, the same rule that applies at the Academy Awards.
Absent Categories
Due to regular lack of competition there will be no Original Song category and due to my lack of research in 2023 there will also be no Documentary or Short film categories. I will however be announcing nominees for acting ensemble, which equates with the top prize ate the SAG Awards, as well an award for stunt work, a category egregiously absent from the Academy Awards.
New Categories
Despite the absent categories which would usually be present at the Academy Awards, I will be introducing three new categories which I believe should be considered by AMPAS in the future. The first category is recognised at several awards bodies and is for acting Ensemble, a category which equates to Best Picture at the SAG Awards. Another acting award I will be introducing is that for Voice Acting. Despite some memorable voice performances over the years, these are roles that will never be recognised at the Academy, so it only seems right to acknowledge these acting achievements here. The final new category is also one that is present at SAG, which is for Stunt work, a category which is egregiously absent from the Academy Awards despite having a guild.
Eligibility
Much like the Academy Awards, I will only consider films with a 2023 US release date for all categories but unlike the Academy I will consider any film for the International Feature category, not limiting any given country to one nomination but the production cannot be from the US, e.g. “Past Lives”.

I love this! (Although I’m not happy with your Barbie snubs😉) I watched Past Lives yesterday and absolutely loved it. Wow, what a poignant, brilliant film.

Robbie and Gerwig did excellent work, and Barbie was on the fringes of several other nominations but actress and director were so strong this year I could not squeeze them in

I am a huge fan of both and while I am aware of the backlash surrounding their recent snubs, they are two very competitive categories

Indeed. Do you think there’s actually discrimination against female directors? As in, men directors are a priority?

I dont think there is when it comes to awards voters as Justine Triet was nominated. However, in the industry as a whole there is a considerable difference in the number of male directors and female directors. So when award season comes round there will always be more chance of categories to be male dominated as they are producing more movies so they have the odds in their favour. This is more of an industry issue with regard to female directors not getting larger projects or struggling to break into the industry, which is a problem but hopefully in recent years with the likes of Fennell, Gerwig and Zhao emerging it may slowly improve

Fantastic awards Dan! It seems you have fixed my issues with this year’s Oscars. I was extremely upset Past Lives wasn’t a major contender with acting nods. Glad you fixed that.
