With only 3 weeks until the 96th Academy Awards, the actors in contention have had their final chance to win over the voters with their acceptance speeches at the 30th SAG Awards.
The acceptances proved pivotal in 2023 as we saw the SAG winners perfectly align with the eventual Oscar winners. The winners from the class of 2024 will be hoping for the same come the Academy Award ceremony on the 10th March.
Those that seem unstoppable at this point are Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Robert Downey Jr. who have swept throughout award season for their supporting roles in “The Holdovers” and “Oppenheimer” respectively. It also appears that Cillian Murphy has began to distance himself from his fiercest competitor Paul Giamatti in the Lead Actor category with another win here, leaving Giamatti with only the Critics’ Choice and Golden Globe Comedy Awards.
The most intriguing category this season is Lead Actress where Lily Gladstone has earned her place back in the race with a win here to go with her Golden Globe Drama award. Emma Stone‘s showier performance in “Poor Things” has seen her walk home with the Golden Globe Comedy award, BAFTA and Critics’ Choice. I would still put Stone as the frontrunner but Gladstone’s narrative is far more compelling so who knows.

Good analysis! Yes I’m not surprised in the slightest by this list of winners. It’s seeming like Oppenheimer has become an unstoppable force at this point. Love that movie but sad that it has buried the smaller movies in the dust. A shame that “Past Lives” isn’t getting more attention because it deserved it. Here’s why:
