My Top Ten Movie Sequels

There has been plenty of buzz recently following the release of Dune: Part Two, with many fans of the film stating it is the greatest sequel of all time. I do agree with the consensus that the film is indeed superior to its predecessor and should go down in cinematic history as one of the all time great sequels – but is it the best?

I have compiled a list as to what I believe to be the greatest movie sequels of all time, of which these movies have not only expanded upon their first films but complimented them to improve the franchise as a whole. To keep things simple and to honour Dune: Part Two, I have only considered the second movie in any given franchise, so do not expect to see the likes of Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Skyfall or Mad Max: Fury Road here. I also know I will upset some people by not including The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers or Avatar: The Way of Water, as I am not a fan of either franchise.

Honourable mentions:

  • 10 Cloverfield Lane
  • Evil Dead II
  • Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
  • The Godfather Part II
  • Pusher II
  • Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
  • Spider-Man 2
  • Terminator 2: Judgement Day
  • Top Gun: Maverick
  • Toy Story 2

  1. Great list! I definitely agree with you about a number of movies listed here. I’m going to single out “The Dark Knight” which is my favorite comic-book film of all-time. A mesmerizing masterpiece, it set a sky-high standard for comic-book movies that has been impossible to meet. While I absolutely loved “The Dark Knight Rises”, it paled in comparison to its superior predecessor. Here’s my spoiler analysis of “The Dark Knight Rises”:

  2. This is why I love social media! You post terrific “conversation starters” – since for me “The Godfather Part II” is the greatest sequel ever…but we all have our own lists – I will say, without saying which one, that there is one film on your list that I cannot ever suffer through again – and it’s pretty highly ranked! Considering how there are SO many worthless sequels just trying to make a cheap buck, this is a list of great depth!

      1. It’s why we all have our favorites, no doubt based on the types of films and artists we were exposed to – or perhaps how we like to consume a story…I have loved films others don’t get AT ALL, and there are a few that others have LOVED that I hated…and we all have the right to feel the way we feel!
