Another tricky category this one. As proven by “Barbie” this past year, you can never guarantee as to which of the screenplay categories the Academy will place certain films depending on their origin. The Academy also love to celebrate writer-directors in this category, of which there are plenty here.
Possible major players “Sing Sing” and “Blitz” see their directors Greg Kwedar and Steve McQueen also have writing credits to their names. Then their is recent Academy favourite Yorgos Lanthimos who has co-written his upcoming anthology film “Kinds of Kindness”.
Strong Contenders
- Sing Sing (Clint Bentley, Greg Kwedar)
- Blitz (Steve McQueen)
- Kinds of Kindness (Yorgos Lanthimos, Efthimis Filippou)
- Megalopolis (Francis Ford Coppola)
- The Apprentice (Gabriel Sherman)
Possible Contenders
- A Real Pain (Jesse Eisenberg)
- Didi (Sean Wang)
- Juror No. 2 (Jonathan Abrams)
- Challengers (Justin Kuritzkes)
- Flint Strong (Barry Jenkins)
Outsiders
- Bird (Andrea Arnold)
- His Three Daughters (Azazel Jacobs)
- Maria (Steven Knight)
- The End (Joshua Oppenheimer, Rasmus Heisterberg)
- I Saw the TV Glow (Jane Schoenbrun)

Great predictions for screenplay. Hmm again this is just me guessing but I am rooting for Steve McQueen here. He’s proven such a fantastic writer penning the screenplay for such powerful films as “12 Years a Slave”. I think he’s long overdue an Oscar in this category. Here is my review for “12 Years a Slave”:
