I was going in relatively blind in March with my very early Academy Award predictions, but not a couple months later I have a slightly clearer indication as to which 2024 releases may become Oscar hopefuls.
As well as the cinematic releases of April and May to take into account, another major consideration for my predictions is that of the recent Cannes Film Festival. One of the earliest and major festivals of the award circuit, Cannes has had a strong correlation with the Academy in recent times, with 3 of the past 4 Palme d’Or winners going on to receive Best Picture nominations: ‘Anatomy of a Fall’, ‘Triangle of Sadness’ and most famously ‘Parasite’, which would the coveted Oscar statuette in 2020. This bodes well for Sean Baker and his top prize winning festival entry ‘Anora’ as well as a few other movies that did well during the festival.
At the other end of the spectrum are films that did not perform, including Francis Ford Coppola‘s ‘Megalopolis’, which as of writing does not have a distributor, much like Donald Trump biopic ‘The Apprentice’. The latter of which may stand a better chance come nomination morning due to its relevance in an electoral year, however, with a cease and desist letter from Trump himself, it may struggle for distribution.

Great predictions for Best Picture at the upcoming Oscars. I think at this point it’s too early to tell which film is going to win the award. However, I have a strong feeling that it would be “Dune: Part 2”. Denis Villeneuve did such an extraordinary job of adapting the classic science-fiction book into compelling entertainment. It was one of those rare sequels that managed to surpass the high standard set by its predecessor. It would be interesting to see whether the Academy agrees though as it usually gravitates towards period pieces rather than science-fiction blockbusters. Nevertheless, I do hope that the fantastic movie gets the recognition that it deserves.

So much to choose from! As one pundit said once: they are all best picture nominees un til they screen for the first time…there will of course be films not even on our radar yet, but your list is a very comprehensive look at what is happening in cinema 2024 – bravo!
