Much like Original, Adapted can be difficult to predict which films are going to be based in either of the two screenwriting categories. One obvious question mark is “Sing Sing” which could be a huge contender come the Academy Awards in 2025. The film is not based on any notable pre-existing material but is based on a true story that is well documented, with real convicts essentially re-enacting their own story.
The screenplay categories are looking very stacked this year, particularly when it comes to adapted. Out of the fifteen films I have currently listed to consider, ten of them have been in my Best Picture predictions at some point over the past few months, with the other five being seen as possible contenders. Based on recent festival reviews, it is hard to look over “Conclave”, “Nickel Boys” and “Emilia Perez” when it comes to screenplay, which along with “Sing “Sing”, will take some serious dislodging. One heavy hitter that is starting to look shaky for the first time since my predictions began back in March is “Dune: Part Two”. Despite the critical and financial success and likelihood it will get a Best Picture nod, the screenplay itself is not one of the sci-fi epic’s strongest elements, which may see it drop out at the expense of a more character driven narrative. This may pave the way for one of a number of films, such as: Luca Guadagnino‘s “Queer”; and Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown”
