As we steadily approach the Oscar nominations on the 17th January, it is getting clearer to see that the Academy will most likely cover the majority of the ten Best Picture slots with the screenplay categories. If this trend was to continue, all films pushing for a Best Picture nomination are all but guaranteed a screenplay nomination, whether it be Adapted or Original, unless one is ore competitive than the other.
This year, it is shaping up that the original screenplay category will most likely be the thinner of the two categories, which bodes well for “Anora”, “The Brutalist” and “A Real Pain”, all three of which potentially seen as winners of the award at this stage, with the first two being serious contenders throughout the entire award ceremony, and the latter being a strong screenplay candidate.
“The Substance” may very well sneak into Picture also, plus it took home the screenplay award at Cannes in the summer, and has not missed a nomination anywhere so far. The final slot will most likely be between “Challengers” and “September 5”, both of which are competing for a Best Picture slot. If one or the other was to get a Picture nomination, they will be almost certain to show up here as their only other likely nomination above the line.
