31st Annual SAG Awards

We are in the final stretch as we approach the 97th Academy Awards, now only a week away. An unpredictable award season has seen industry predictions change continuously over the last few months, with the likes of “Anora”, “The Brutalist” and “Emilia Perez” being seen as frontrunners at some point during the hectic season. With the Oscars taking place this coming Sunday, we now have all the precursors done and dusted following last night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, which in its 30 year history has seen its Ensemble winner match up with the Oscar Best Picture winner around half the time.

SAG makes up the largest voting body in the Academy, so whoever does well at the Actors’ Guild is expected to do well on Oscar night. This bodes extremely well for Edward Berger‘s “Conclave”, which was this year’s ensemble recipient, beating outing current Oscar frontrunner “Anora”, which left the ceremony empty handed, as star Mikey Madison lost out once again to Demi Moore in Lead Actress. By winning last night, and at last week’s BAFTAs, “Conclave” has well and truly established itself as a serious contender alongside “Anora” in what now appears to be a two horse race.

Despite missing out on major awards at BAFTA, Golden Globes and SAG, Sean baker’s drama did manage to win big at Critic’s Choice, PGA and DGA, and still I would consider it the one to watch, however it would need at least a Screenplay or director win on Oscar night to secure a decent package.

The supporting categories appear to be done and dusted as Zoe Saldana and Kieran Culkin have swept the season, but Timothee Chalamet‘s late surge by winning last night puts immense pressure on Adrien Brody ahead of Sunday’s Oscar ceremony.

  1. What a season! The film with the most nominations implodes in scandal, and the other assumed frontrunner “The Brutalist” continues its slow fade, just as “A Complete Unknown” has with the exception of Chalamet – for those who don’t follow SAGS, they have forecast 3 recent Oscar winners with this vote: “Green Book”, “Coda” and “Argo” were surprise winners here before going on to Oscar victory…we will see if “Anora” overcomes this after being on a roll: also, for those who don’t know, the Best Picture category at the Oscars is the only one on a sliding scale, so a film with lots of #2 and #3 votes can beat the overall #1 vote getter IF that #1 film also gets #9 and #10 votes as well from some voters, and word it that is the problem with “The Brutalist” – too polarizing for some…”Conclave” has few detractors at all which can make all the difference!

    1. I think the preferential ballot can work in Conclave’s favour. It is currently looking like it could get the Argo package of Picture, Screenplay and Editing despite missing a director nom, following its SAG win
